Early life and education
Raised by his parents, Wayne and Mae, alongside his sister, Stephanie, Shane was an adventurous child who found joy in Alaska’s wilderness. The family’s guiding business gave him an early education in the backcountry and a deep respect for the land.
At Palmer High School, Shane brought the same focus to the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. His years in JROTC strengthened his sense of duty and gave direction to a desire to serve that had been present since childhood.
Leadership recognized
Shane earned the Alaska National Guard Adjutant General’s Award in 2002. The following year, he was named the U.S. Army Alaska JROTC Cadet of the Year—recognition of the discipline and leadership he brought to his unit and school.
From Palmer to the U.S. Army
After graduating in 2003, Shane answered what his family understood as a lifelong calling. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and trained as an M1A1 armored tank crewman.
He later joined the 1st Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment, 1st Armored Division. Stationed out of Friedberg, Germany, his unit deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Photography, poetry, and the outdoors
Shane was known as a talented photographer and poet, a devoted Christian, and a man with a generous heart. He loved hunting and fishing in Alaska’s backcountry and climbing through the Taylor and Chugach mountain ranges.
Friends and family recall that he was happiest when sharing the outdoors with others. Even while serving, his generosity reached beyond the people he knew: he regularly dedicated a portion of his pay to support an orphanage in India.
